Paul, Silas and the Fortune Teller: God’s Word is a Remedy for Confusion

The school bell has rung, class is now in session.

I want to talk about a study I was doing on the Spirit of Divination, also known as Python. This study came from the Book of Acts Chapter 16 verses 16-18. I am going to put the text below and unpack it afterwards. It reads as follows:

Key points from the passage

  1. Paul and Silas were walking around town.
  2. Slave girl was possessed with a Spirit of Divination, and brought her masters a lot of money telling fortunes, then she met Paul and Silas.
  3. Slave girl announced for many days, following them around, that Paul and Silas were servants of the Most High God who proclaim the way of salvation.
  4. The slave girl was speaking the truth but the spirit behind her words, was a bit off.
  5. Paul was greatly annoyed and said to the spirit inside of the girl to come out in the name of Jesus Christ and the spirit did that very hour.

The word divination in Greek is referred to as python. Python was a serpent god worshiped for his wisdom during those times. The interesting thing about this spirit is that when it is around you, you may not notice it straight away, but eventually it will make you feel off and very grieved. This spirit followed Paul and Silas many days before Paul decided to deal with it.

Think of the nature of a Python. Its ultimate purpose is to kill its prey by constriction and asphyxiation. It is a cunning spirit that is often undetected because it camouflages itself. It will flatter you in your face, but defame you behind your back.

You will need spiritual discernment to recognize it because it will always pretend when it thinks you are looking. But just like it had quite the surprise from Paul when he turned around and commanded it to come out, it will have the same surprise today when you expel it from your life.

When you recognize this spirit, you must expel it. It is an enemy that will attack with true statements and false declaration of friendship, as it slowly constricts you from moving in the direction that God has for your life.

Spirit of Python – Methods

  1. Constriction. Most snakes destroy with its venom but this snake slowly squeezes the victim until they lose their breath, will and motivation to continue forward in purpose.
  2. Causing you to doubt what God has purposed for your life. The serpent in the Book of Genesis did this to Eve. Eve had her instructions but after a conversation with the serpent, she begin to doubt God’s original word which ended up leading her to change the life of mankind as they knew it.
  3. Speaking enough truth to draw you in. This spirit is very wise and full of knowledge so it tends to fool people with having the appearance of wisdom and togetherness, with the true motivation behind it, leading to division.
  4. Gaslighting/confusion. This spirit loves to manipulate situations around it. It does this through sharing a little truth and peppering it with lies, eventually causing people to become so disoriented that they do not know if they are coming or going. It will sit back and watch deliciously as chaos unfolds around it. You must have a sound mind when dealing with this spirit or it will make you continuously second guess yourself and lead you to madness.
  5. Fatigue. After experiencing so much gaslighting and confusion, it hopes to steal your energy and wear you down to nothing.

This spirit will make you doubt what God has already revealed to you through His Word. This spirit puts a question mark where God put a period. It will try to make you reach a state of confusion so that you abort the ultimate purpose for your life. Do not let it win.

If you have received a Word from God, believe it, stand on it. Stay connected to what you have been petitioning Him for. It has already been settled for you.

The most dangerous thing about a snake is not its weight, it is his mouth and cunning ways. Because if it can encircle you with false pretenses and win your trust, you will become its prey.

I will let God’s Word be the last Word. It is Settled.

The school bell has rung, class dismissed.
